Medical Assistant

The Allied Health program requires some of the following standards and technical skills while performing duties in the Medical Assisting field. These are not conditions for admission to the programs, but do indicate abilities and characteristics necessary for success in the field.

Work closely with individuals requiring attention.

 

  • Move/operate patient conveyance devices and equipment such as stretchers, wheelchairs and monitors.
  • Respond appropriately to sight and sound cues, e.g., voices, movements, distress behaviors, and equipment signals.
  • Respond to directions and requests from telephone or other electronic communication devices.
  • Differentiate colors and shades on dipsticks and compare them to charts.
  • Use a microscope.
  • Manipulates syringes, needles, and other invasive devices.
  • Accurately record patient history, vital signs, and other information.
  • Palpate pulses and veins to perform venipuncture.
  • Wear personal protective equipment such as surgical gloves, goggles, and face shields.

 

MEDICAL ASSISTING 900

The Medical Assisting program prepares students to perform both administrative and clinical duties under the direction of a physician. Students will be trained in a broad range of skills that are essential to a career in a medical setting – including administrative tasks and clinical duties. This program will focus on medical practices and procedures, medical ethics and law, medical insurance and record keeping and patient preparation for basic laboratory procedures and tests. The program will also prepare students to work as cardiac monitoring technicians. A 120-hour internship is required upon completion of the coursework.





MEDICAL ASSISTING 960

This program is designed for students who do not possess a high school diploma or GED. Achieving acceptable scores on an independent admissions test is required. The program emphasizes the skills necessary to succeed in school and in the business world. The Medical Assisting program prepares students to perform both administrative and clinical duties under the direction of a physician. Students will be trained in a broad range of skills that are essential to a career in a medical setting – including administrative tasks and clinical duties. This program will focus on medical practices and procedures, medical ethics and laws, medical insurance & record keeping and patient preparation for basic laboratory procedures and tests.
